Why I’m No Longer Using Monat Products: A Journey of Discovery and Integrity

Today, I am sharing a compelling story from a friend who has faced similar challenges and issues while using Monat products. With her extensive background in multi-level marketing (MLM), she offers a unique and insightful perspective on the themes of information control and integrity within this space. Given her experiences, her insights are particularly valuable. I highly recommend taking the time to learn about the BITE Model, which is frequently utilized in MLMs to exert control over their participants. Additionally, please be aware that this story has been thoughtfully updated to provide additional anonymity for the individuals involved. Here goes…

“There’s something I’ve been wanting to share for a while now, but it just didn’t feel like the right time until recently. I’ve decided to write this final piece about my experience with Monat—one I hope will encourage others to make informed decisions when it comes to the products they use and sell. So, here goes.

A few months ago, I made the decision to stop building my Monat business. At the time, I had still planned to share the products with VIPs who wanted to purchase through me, but that changed after I uncovered some unsettling information. What I learned about the ingredients in Monat products led me to stop using them altogether. And I believe it’s important for you to hear this, too—especially if you’re using or selling these products.

My Personal Experience with Monat

To start, I want to be clear that everything I share is my personal opinion, based on my own experiences and those of others I’ve spoken with. None of us have hard scientific data, but when you hear enough personal stories and see recurring patterns, you start to wonder about the potential risks. That’s what happened to me.

When I began using Monat products back in 2022, I was already dealing with some thyroid imbalances. So, while I didn’t immediately blame Monat for the health issues I experienced, I started to suspect the products may have contributed to my symptoms. I experienced hair loss, weight gain, and general hormonal imbalance—but I attributed most of this to my thyroid issues.

But then something else happened. Later, I bought Monat products for my daughter, and around the end of September, she started losing a significant amount of hair. She mentioned that she was losing a large handful of hair every time she brushed it. We tested her iron levels, which were low, and she was also experiencing very heavy and painful menstrual cycles—a sign of estrogen dominance that I recognized from my training. This made me begin to seriously question whether Monat products were playing a role.

The Role of Capixyl in Hair Growth

I started digging into the ingredients, especially Capixyl, the trademarked hair-growth ingredient in nearly all Monat products. While I initially believed that red clover (the key component of Capixyl) was beneficial, I didn’t realize that when it’s concentrated in an extract, it can have estrogenic effects on the body.

Excess estrogen, especially from external sources, can contribute to a range of health issues, including hair loss. Capixyl, which contains red clover extract, can potentially exacerbate hormone imbalances by introducing estrogen-like effects. And while this may not affect everyone, for those who are already struggling with hormonal imbalances, the impact can be significant.

After speaking to others and researching further, I found that many women were experiencing similar issues. Some had developed hair loss or scalp irritation, and others had reported hormonal issues that seemed to worsen after using the products. This raised a red flag for me.

The Shocking Discovery of PFAS in Monat’s Aerosol Products

As I continued my research, I stumbled upon another troubling revelation: Tetrafluoropropene, a key ingredient in many of Monat’s aerosol products like hairspray, dry shampoo, and mousse, is classified as a PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)—also known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals do not break down and can accumulate in the body over time, potentially leading to long-term health risks. PFAS are notorious for their environmental persistence and have been linked to serious health issues like cancer, liver damage, and hormone disruption. And yet, Monat continues to use it as a propellant in their aerosol products.

The fact that these ingredients are in the products many of us are spraying on our scalps and inhaling is deeply concerning, particularly since PFAS are rated 10 on the Environmental Working Group (EWG) scale, which marks them as some of the most toxic ingredients. This is a critical concern that I believe needs more attention.

Capixyl and Other Unregulated Ingredients

On top of Capixyl and PFAS, many of the ingredients in Monat products, such as Progeline and certain peptides, are experimental with no long-term safety data. While these ingredients may seem promising for skin or hair health, we have no idea what they could be doing to our hormonal systems over time, especially when they’re being absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the scalp.

The scalp is actually 33 times more absorbent than the soles of our feet, meaning that ingredients in hair care products can quickly enter the body. This is why I’m so concerned about the potential effects of these unregulated, untested ingredients.

Why Integrity Matters in Network Marketing

As someone who has been part of the network marketing community for years, I’ve seen firsthand the power of this business model to help people. But it’s also a system that relies on people conforming to the company’s narrative—often without questioning it. In many cases, companies like Monat rely on the herd mentality to keep selling products without considering the long-term consequences.

The problem, for me, lies in the lack of transparency. Monat has marketed these products as being low-tox and safe for everyone, but when you dig deeper, the reality is far more complicated. I’ve personally seen how women—especially those in leadership positions—are aware of the potential risks of these products but continue to sell them without disclosing the full truth to their customers. It’s heartbreaking.

I understand the desire to make money, but when money is put before integrity, nobody wins. That’s why I’ve made the decision to stop using Monat products altogether. My health—and the health of my family—comes first. I’ve replaced the products with organic shampoo and skin care, and I feel much better for it.

Closing Thoughts: The Importance of Transparency

Ultimately, it’s about being honest and transparent. If you’re using or selling these products, it’s your responsibility to inform others about the potential risks and let them make an informed decision for themselves. You deserve to know what you’re putting on your body, and so do those who trust you to sell these products to them.

I pray that the women in the industry—and those leading these companies—take a step back and reflect on the integrity of their actions. When we know better, we have a responsibility to do better.

To all those who have spoken out about these issues—thank you. Your voices matter, and they are not being ignored.

Let’s continue to question the status quo, seek out the truth, and above all, prioritize our health and integrity.”
