Exploring Childcare Options: Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Little Ones
Choosing the right childcare option for your child is a crucial decision that can significantly impact their early development and well-being. There is a wide range of childcare options available, each offering unique benefits and catering to different needs. In this blog, we will explore some of the childcare options in Perth, helping you make an informed choice for your little ones.
1. Long Day Care:
Long Day Care centers in Perth offer reliable full-day care for children aged from birth to five years old. These centers operate on weekdays, providing a safe and stimulating environment for children while their parents are at work. Long Day Care centers often follow a structured curriculum, incorporating educational activities, playtime, and meals. Cons may include exposure to more bugs, a higher turnover of staff, a higher ratio of educator to children and less flexibility for weekend and after-hours work. KindiCare is an excellent website to find a provider near you.
2. Family Day Care:
Family Day Care is an excellent option for families seeking a more personalised and home-like environment for their children. In this setting, qualified educators care for a small group of children in their own homes. Family Day Care offers flexibility in terms of hours and can provide a nurturing and familiar environment for your child's early years. Check out Family Day Care WA to find a service near you. You will need to navigate the educator requiring leave at times so this is something to consider upfront.
3. Kindergarten/Preschool (school age calculator here):
Kindergarten or Preschool programs are designed for children aged three to five years old and focus on preparing them for formal schooling. These programs offer a play-based curriculum that encourages social interaction, cognitive development, and early literacy and numeracy skills. Kindergartens in Perth are often attached to Primary Schools and operate during school terms. Privately run kindies are another option. These include private schools, early learning programs through child care providers and homeschool pods. There are also Community Kindergartens that offer an entirely play-based educational program.
4. Occasional Care:
Occasional Care centers provide flexible care for children on an as-needed basis. This option is ideal for parents who require childcare for short periods, such as attending appointments or running errands. Occasional Care centers offer a safe and engaging environment for children to explore and interact with others. Ask around for recommendations. Our local favourite is Booragoon Occasional Care.
5. Out of School Hours Care (OSHC):
For school-aged children, Out of School Hours Care programs are available before and after school, as well as during school holidays. OSHC centers provide a range of activities, including homework assistance, sports, arts and crafts, and outdoor play. These programs offer a seamless transition from school to care, ensuring your child's safety and engagement during non-school hours.
6. Home-based Care:
Hiring a babysitter, nanny, au pair, friend or family member provides a more personalized and individualised approach to childcare. They work directly in your home, allowing for one-on-one attention and tailored care for your child. This option can be particularly beneficial for families with specific needs or irregular work schedules. There are multiple Facebook groups and organisations that help connect families with care - see lists below. While this option is the least formal it’s still important to establish expectations from the outset.
7. Business-related Creches: This is informal child care offered in businesses like gyms or shopping centres that are generally for 2-3 hours maximum. Immunisation details are not legally required for Creche although some businesses will have specific policies. SOR Creche blog coming soon.

Enrolment Requirements
Immunisation requirements for childcare services, kindergarten and schools can be found here. Home-based care, creche and some Occassional Care centres do not fall under this legislation but may still request immunisation records as a precaution.
Exemption requirements include Aboriginality, a Centrelink Health Care Card and a few extenuating circumstances. Use the Enrolling an Exempt Child form and provide any applicable evidence with your child’s enrolment. Catch-up immunisation schedules can also be arranged with your local GP. These can only ever be done once and last six months.
